The President opens another evening of the Newcastle Speakers Club. Each Meeting is opened and closed by the President. The President holds a weighty office, pressures of this demanding role often mean that the President is unavailable in which case his Vice President stands in.......
A visiting President from the neighbouring Tyneside Club lends dignity to the proceedings. Don't be put off by his chain of office, there is no initiation ceremony, anyone can join the Newcastle Speakers Club. The Tyneside Club is a predominantly male club but the Newcastle Club is mixed.
Each meeting has three speakers who give prepared speeches, usually of six to ten minutes in duration. The speakers are the stars of the show. Speakers are not encouraged to speak beyond ten minutes as this tends to try the patience of the audience.
The Chairman is responsible for the smooth running of a meeting. A
demanding role for an experienced member of the club. Usually the
Chairman has no problem controlling the meeting. The Chairman
maintains a mixture of gravitas and bonhomie, a cross between Alistair
Campbell and Humphrey Littleton...
The Topic Chairman supervises the second half of the evening, he gives each member a three minute topic on a subject on which they have no prior warning, it is a role suited to the sadistic and is usually enjoyed by everyone.
